New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
