Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Victories After Player Detentions

NBA game action

Miami recorded eighty-six opening half points versus the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a decisive 146 to 114 win against the Grizzlies in their first NBA match after player Terry Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal sports betting.

Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also arrested as part of a extensive federal probe into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.

However, the Heat were focused as they recorded 86 first-half points to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year existence.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later said Rozier had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through the situation."

The Trail Blazers also secured their first game since the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."

League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests

Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.

"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.

"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and investigating."
