Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.
He commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, excited about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their development".
Summers, who once presided over Harvard University, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The recently released communications revealed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the day before his 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it accepted Summers' choice to resign.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," OpenAI remarked.
Congressional Action
This development follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on recently to endorse a legislation that would compel the US justice department to disclose its files on the case.
The measure will subsequently move to the desk of the White House for approval. Trump has indicated he intends to endorse the measure, after changing his stance on the subject following objections from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of financier-linked messages released by the legislative panel recently included multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The communications revealed that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with he often attempting to link the academic to prominent international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the public, the former official stated he took "total ownership for my poor choice to maintain communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to rebuild faith and fix bonds with the people most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor served in leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He headed Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public duties previously on Monday, he said he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where he was a researcher, verified that he was ceased to be associated with the organization.
Summers joined the directorate of the AI company, which makes the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
