Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the early names in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight season.
And both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they start the search of hiring a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is additionally appearing as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a surprising choice given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not need to pay any compensation.
