A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.

The successful offer for the 535-pound fish came from the company of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets across the country and abroad.

"The year's tuna brings fortune," stated the business owner, a notable participant at the annual new year's auction.

Known as the Tuna King, this industry figure is noted for placing substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Past

Following the auction, the winner admitted to the press that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price escalated in no time."

This new purchase exceeds his own record purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to break his personal record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be available at its restaurants nationwide.

The high-energy energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was promptly sliced up for diners at the bidder's sushi chains shortly after the auction ended.

"I feel like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so auspicious as the year starts," remarked one happy customer.
